ALTA expresses concern over the impact of union actions on Colombian Airports
If these actions are not resolved promptly, they could significantly impact air transport users, tourism, connectivity, and the country’s economy

Bogotá, December 4, 2024 - The Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) expresses its deep concern about the potential consequences of the actions announced by the Migration Colombia union and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 3, 2024. If these actions are not resolved promptly, they could significantly impact air transport users, tourism, connectivity, and the country’s economy.
We recognize the importance of ensuring fair working conditions for Migration Colombia workers and understand the relevance of addressing their demands. However, such mobilizations cause delays in migration services and severely affect airport operations, particularly during a critical month like December, which sees one of the highest passenger flows of the year.
Aviation is a key pillar for Colombia's economic and social development. Every year, more than 40 million passengers pass through the country's airports, and air transport directly contributes approximately USD 2.3 billion to the national GDP, in addition to generating around 665,000 direct and indirect jobs. This sector not only connects Colombia’s most remote regions with the rest of the world but also boosts tourism and facilitates trade.
Any disruption in migration services can have significant consequences for passengers, airlines, and Colombia's reputation as a tourist destination. During the peak season, the country receives a large number of international and domestic travelers, and any impact could result in cancellations, delays, and a negative experience that may deter future visits.
Therefore, we urge the parties involved to prioritize constructive dialogue to find solutions that safeguard the population’s right to mobilization while minimizing the impact on users and Colombia's economy. ALTA reaffirms its willingness to collaborate with authorities, unions, and other relevant stakeholders in seeking agreements that ensure the continuity of airport operations and preserve the stability of the aviation sector.
Commitment to this essential public service, involving connectivity, economic development, and passenger experience, must be a shared priority for all stakeholders. We trust that the necessary measures will be taken to prevent further disruptions in the air transport system.
