45 Years Advancing Aviation in Latin America and the Caribbean

On April 8, 1980, twelve airlines gathered in Bogotá to establish what was then known as AITAL, driven by the vision of increasing connectivity across our countries. Today, as the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), we honor this legacy with an eye toward the future, committed to fostering an increasingly accessible and environmentally responsible aviation.

Over these decades, LAC aviation has experienced remarkable growth. Since 1980, the number of passengers carried in Latin America and the Caribbean has increased sevenfold, and the number of direct international routes has more than doubled since the 1990s. Average airfare prices have dropped by over 50% in real terms, enabling millions more people to travel by plane.

This democratization of air travel has been driven by our airlines, which today represent over 80% of regional traffic. These companies create jobs, unite families, connect distant communities, stimulate tourism, and strengthen local economies.

The future presents even greater opportunities, and we have the best professionals to continue growing. At ALTA, we strive to reduce operational and regulatory barriers and support our countries in developing public policies that promote increasingly safe, efficient, competitive, and sustainable aviation. The best of our history is yet to come.

With more than 30 years dedicated to this industry, I have had the privilege of witnessing ALTA’s role in the region and feel profound pride and responsibility in serving as the Executive Director and CEO of this important association.
