Why we do it?

Aviation has historically been a predominantly male-dominated industry, and the statistics prove it:

  • The International Aviation Womens Association (IAWA) and Oliver Wyman study, “Takeoff to Leadership: Advancing Women in Aviation” revealed that only 3% of the CEOs of the world’s 100 largest airlines are women.
  • Research by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) reveals that the participation of women in roles such as pilots, air traffic controllers and maintenance technicians barely increased from 4.5% in 2016 to 4.9% in 2021.
  • As long as 50% of the population is female, industry growth will not be possible or sustainable with such low participation figures.
  • Boeing forecasts that around 41,000 new maintenance technicians will be required over the next 20 years for the growing demand in air transport.
  • The insertion of women in technical roles is essential to be able to meet a growing demand. This is a valuable opportunity to promote a sustainable, creative, efficient and inclusive sector, where both men and women can contribute significantly.

Impact

Aviation plays an essential role in our society, not only as the safest and most efficient means of transport available in Latin America and the Caribbean, but also as a powerful engine foreconomic and social development. We are committed to promoting a greater balance in the opportunities available for women in the region, knowing that in this way we impact entire societies.

Furthermore, we are convinced that a more inclusive industry will not only promote equal opportunities, but will also stimulate creativity and innovation, thus strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of the sector to face the economic and technical challenges of the future.

Program Beneficiaries

In its initial stage, the program will provide scholarships to women who are in their final year of a career as Aeronautical Maintenance Technicians at Instituto de Formación Aeronáutica (IFA) in Costa Rica and Escuela de Aviación del Pacífico (EAP) in Colombia. In addition to financial support, the students will have the opportunity to interact with experienced executives from world-renowned companies and access financial support to get the certifications that will enable them to enter the job market.

We are already working with other educational centers in the region to expand the scope of this mission.
