Capt. Heather Ross, Engineering Test Pilot and 787 Chief Pilot / Boeing
Captain Heather Ross is an engineering test pilot and 787 Chief Pilot for Boeing Test & Evaluation Flight Operations based in Seattle, WA. Heather is responsible for supporting the current production and development of the 787 airplane, providing leadership for flight deck integration and systems design , handling qualities assessments, engineering flight simulator evaluations, airplane demonstrations and customer engagement and support. Previously, Heather was the lead pilot on the number one 777-9 flight test airplane providing pilot support of flight test planning activities and conducting test flights. Her aviation experience includes over 11,000 hours in all types of airplanes, and she currently has the most flight hours in the 777-9 airplane. She also holds an FAA type rating in all current Boeing airplanes.
Heather joined Boeing as a flight test engineer specializing in autopilot, FMC, autothrottle, and navigation systems (INS, IRS). She was hired as a production pilot and then transferred to an engineering pilot position on the 787 program in 2005. While at Boeing as a pilot, Heather has participated in numerous test engineering research and development flights on the 777, 757-300, 737NG, several military programs, ecoDemonstrator airplanes, 747-8, 787-8, 787-9, 787-10, and 737 MAX airplanes. She spent 10 years as a project pilot on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, where she executed the Boeing and FAA certification test program on the number four 787-8 and the number three 787-9 flight test airplanes. She also flew the first flight on the 787-9 (GE) test airplane. In addition, Heather is a qualified formation pilot and performs formation/airborne photography flights.
Heather served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot. She flew the C-5 and C-141 transport airplanes and flew over 40 missions into the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Shield and Storm. Before she returned to Boeing as a production flight test pilot, Heather served as a pilot for four years at United Airlines, where she was a flight engineer on the 747 and 727 airplanes, and a first officer on the 737. She also holds an FAA Flight Engineer license and has over 1,500 hours in the Lockheed C-5 and C-141 airplanes.
Heather is a graduate from the University of Washington, with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Engineering, Department of Aeronautics and holds an MBA from Seattle University.
