Rafael Rastrello
LATAM Airlines Group
Capt. Rafael Rastrello, VP of Safety & Security & Boeing 777/787 Captain / LATAM Airlines Group
With over 25 years in aviation and 16+ years in Aviation Safety, I bring a strategic, systems-based leadership approach to driving organizational safety performance, operational resilience, and risk governance in complex airline environments.
At LATAM Airlines, my career integrates frontline operational expertise with executive decision-making. I previously served as A320 Captain and Instructor and currently operate as a B777/787 Captain, combining deep operational understanding with high-level safety leadership. I oversee programs that strengthen safety culture, enhance risk visibility, and align operational performance with corporate strategy and regulatory expectations.
My background spans critical domains, flight operations, airport infrastructure, quality assurance, and risk management, enabling a comprehensive view of the operational ecosystem and its interdependencies. This holistic perspective supports data-driven decision-making, cross-functional integration, and proactive risk mitigation at scale.
I contribute to global industry governance as:
* Chairman, IATA LATAM RCG (since 2015)
* Chairman, ALTA Safety Group (2017–2019) | Vice-Chair (2016)
As a university professor and international speaker, I advance discussions on safety leadership, human factors, operational intelligence, and strategic risk management. I bring extensive experience with frameworks such as SMS, FOQA, LOSA, IOSA, and ISAGO, supporting innovation and continuous improvement across high-reliability organizations.
My academic path reinforces this executive perspective. I hold a Master’s in Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering and a Post-Graduate degree in Aviation Safety and Continuing Airworthiness, both from ITA. Additional specialization from CENIPA, IATA, Cambridge, and Embry-Riddle has strengthened my capability to integrate engineering rigor, safety science, analytics, and management practices into a cohesive leadership approach.
